COMPANY HISTORY #1
Otto-matic Games And Crowdfunding (May 20th, 2026 – Jeff)
As a hobby, I’ve designed many games over the past 40 years – but never had one published. Here at OMG, my team and I are trying to change that!
This a wonderful time to be creating games. More people are playing them than ever! But finding a publisher is difficult. Fortunately, there’s a new paradigm in publishing called ‘crowdfunding.’ If you’ve written a novel, a song, a script – or even, heaven help you, designed a game – there now exists a way for others to assist you in your efforts to bring your project to life!
We are using Kickstarter to build a ‘campaign page’ for their website. When it’s finished, anyone will be able to visit it and learn about our game. And if interested, they will be able to ‘back’ the endeavor – i.e. make a financial pledge to support us. If enough people do this to meet the project’s goal, it will be ‘funded’: pledges will be collected from the backers. Then we will use that money to produce games and reward our backers.
It’s a beautiful system! In the past, self-publishing was a risky venture. Games had to be produced at scale to keep the unit-cost low. But if there was little demand – perhaps because the creator had trouble promoting it – then lots of games would end up on the Island of Misfit Toys. : (
With crowdfunding, we will know exactly how many games to produce ahead of time. And if there’s insufficient demand to produce them at a reasonable cost, the crowdfunding goal won’t be met – the backers will not be charged anything, and we won’t waste time producing a game that few people want.
Our game is called Countdown To Blastoff. It’s a simple rocket-launching card game; some of you have already played it! (If you followed NASA’s recent Artemis II space flight, you will definitely want to check it out!)
We hope you’ll enjoy witnessing our ‘historic mission’ to launch Countdown To Blastoff – and even help us to spread the word!
