GAME DESIGNER'S DEN #1
The Importance Of Playtesting (July 2nd, 2026 – Jeff)
I talk about playtesting a lot. That’s because it is so important – it’s how a designer makes a game become the best possible version of itself!
I’ve also mentioned that Countdown To Blastoff is essentially the same game it was when I created it close to 20 years ago. That’s true – but I have tweaked the game many times to improve it. Even in the past two years, I’ve made changes in response to feedback I’ve received from playtesters. Handsize is now six cards, not five (to cut down on discarding and redrawing). I’ve added new Power and Trouble cards to the deck. I’ve also added reference cards that ended up simplifying how Power and Trouble cards are used. I believe the game is more fun than ever!
And even though Countdown To Blastoff is ready for publication, playtesting continues. I need answers to questions such as “What is the average playing time?” “What ages can play the game?” and “Does the rulebook do a good job of explaining how to play?”
If you (or anyone you know) would like to take part in this final playtesting phase, I’d greatly appreciate it – please reach out to us. I’ll be scheduling these sessions soon!
